Version History

ExifToolGui Version History

The V6 releases, read from the project’s own GitHub releases listing — plus the original Bogdan GUI and the ExifTool versions the GUI pairs with.

This page lists only releases that can be pointed to. For the current V6 line, every entry below was read on the releases listing of Frank Bijnen’s GitHub repository (github.com/FrankBijnen/ExifToolGui/releases) on 2026-10-23, and each entry links to its release. The one-line notes summarise only what the release text itself says. The repository shows 22 releases in total; this page lists the most recent run of the V6 line, newest first, and the two older lines — the original GUI and the ExifTool pairing — are covered in their own sections below, because mixing three products’ version numbers into one list is exactly the confusion this site exists to undo.

The current release: V6.3.12, updated May 8, 2026, licensed under GPL-3.0. Get it from the download page, and read what changed in it in ExifToolGui V6.3.12: What’s New.

The original GUI (Bogdan Hrastnik)

Before the V6 line there was the original program. Bogdan Hrastnik’s ExifToolGUI is documented on Phil Harvey’s site at exiftool.org/gui, a page signed by Hrastnik himself. That page records that the first ExifToolGUI, v1.00, was published on May 27, 2007, and it documents the v5.xx line; the page’s own footer dates from May 2012. The original required the same pairing discipline as today: the ExifTool Windows executable, renamed to exiftool.exe, and it needed no installation — unzip it anywhere and keep its settings in an .ini file beside the program.

One thing this page deliberately does not print: a claim that a specific 5.x release was ‘the final version’ of the original GUI. That claim circulates on third-party download sites, but no primary source found for this site — not the official GUI page, not a changelog, not an author’s post — confirms it, and no such file was downloaded or verified here. The sourced statement is the one above: the original’s documented line belongs to the period ending around 2012, and development continued years later as Frank Bijnen’s V6 fork. The comparison of the two lines is in ExifToolGui V5 vs V6.

The ExifTool pairing versions

Every GUI release above is only half a setup: ExifToolGui drives Phil Harvey’s ExifTool, which versions on its own schedule. Two ExifTool numbers are current at once, and this site always says which one it means. The latest release overall is 13.59, released May 27, 2026 — a security update. The latest production release is 13.55, released April 7, 2026; ExifTool’s own history page states that other versions are considered development releases, so 13.56 through 13.59 are development builds. Neither number is ‘the latest version’ without its qualifier.

In practice, the pairing is forgiving: the GUI works with the ExifTool you give it, and the choice between the production release and the newest build is about your tolerance for development code, not about features the GUI unlocks. The reasoning is set out in Which ExifTool Version Should You Pair. What is not forgiving is the pairing mechanics — the renamed exiftool.exe and its exiftool_files folder — which have been the same requirement from the original GUI’s documentation to the V6 installer’s automated fetch.
