Affiliate Disclosure
How this unofficial site may earn commissions, how its affiliate links are marked, and the rule that commissions never change its factual content.
exiftoolgui.org is an unofficial resource site about ExifToolGui and ExifTool. It is not published by Frank Bijnen, Bogdan Hrastnik or Phil Harvey. This page explains, in plain terms, how the site may earn money, so that the commercial relationship behind any link is never a surprise.
How this site may earn commissions
Some outbound links on this site are affiliate links. They are routed through this site’s own /go/ redirect links, or are Amazon links carrying this site’s Amazon Associates tag, oliver062-20. If you click an affiliate link and then buy something from that vendor, the site may earn a commission on the purchase. The price you pay is not increased by the commission.
How affiliate links are marked
Affiliate links on this site are marked as sponsored. Pages that contain affiliate links — principally the Workflows & Buying Guides and some comparison guides — carry a disclosure where those links appear, and link back to this page. Treat any /go/ link as a link that may earn this site a commission, whether or not the sentence around it repeats the disclosure.
Where the links point right now
Stated honestly, as of the publication of this page: this site’s affiliate programme applications are pending. Until applications are approved and tracking links are supplied by the programmes, the site’s /go/ affiliate placeholders point to the vendors’ official product pages. No commission is earned on a placeholder that carries no programme tracking, and no placeholder changes where a download link goes.
What commissions never change
Commissions never change the factual content of this site. Version numbers, release dates, file sizes and SHA-256 hashes are published from primary sources and direct measurement, and they would be identical if no affiliate programme existed. A product with no affiliate programme is compared on the same terms as one with a programme — several tools in the Comparisons hub have no programme at all and are linked plainly.
Most importantly: download links to official sources are never paywalled, redirected for commission, or altered by affiliate considerations. The download page’s main channel points to the official GitHub release files for ExifToolGui and to ExifTool’s official distribution, because those are the correct destinations — affiliate links only ever concern the separate commercial products (software, storage, hardware) that workflow and buying guides discuss.
A note on Amazon links
Some buying guides link to products on Amazon. Those links carry this site’s Amazon Associates tag, oliver062-20, in the URL itself, so their affiliate nature is visible in the address rather than hidden behind a redirect. As an Amazon Associate, this site may earn from qualifying purchases made through those tagged links. The same independence rule applies: the products in a buying guide are chosen for the workflow the guide describes, and a product’s presence or absence in Amazon’s catalogue — or in any affiliate programme — does not decide whether a guide recommends it, mentions it, or warns about its limits.
What is not monetised
The core of this site carries no commercial relationship at all. ExifToolGui and ExifTool themselves have no affiliate programme, and nothing about their coverage — which release is presented as current, which hashes are printed, which problems get troubleshooting pages — is influenced by any vendor. Links to the projects’ own pages (the GitHub repository, exiftool.org, the ExifTool forum) are plain links. Where a guide discusses a free alternative alongside a commercial one, both are linked on their merits, and the free option is never hidden, demoted or placed behind the paid one.
Questions
If a link’s status is unclear, assume it may be an affiliate link and judge the surrounding content on its sourced facts — every version claim on this site cites the kind of source it came from, and every hash was measured from the official file. That standard, not the presence or absence of a commission, is what the content asks to be judged by. This disclosure will be updated when the pending programme applications resolve and the placeholder links are replaced with programme tracking links, so that the page continues to describe the site’s links as they actually are, rather than as they were when the page was first written.
